Various attachments - such as tentacles, tails, and language translators - are available in SL. They are called attachments because they attach to (and detach from) avatars. Attachment locations are illustrated in the popular map, below.

A Heads-Up Display (HUD) is a particular type of attachment that provides a display of information to its user. A HUD will appear in inventory as an object and attach to an avatar, usually without showing in-world to other residents.

To attach a HUD (or another object), select the object, Attach, and then the part of the avatar skeleton where you want the object attached.

To detach an object from your avatar, right-click on the object and choose Detach. Alternatively, you can open your inventory window (CTRL-I) and find the attachment you want to remove. Right-click on the item (which will have "(worn at <attachment point>)" after its name), and choose Detach.
